A Virginia history textbook riddled with inaccuracies is not in use in Gloucester or Mathews public schools, according to school division spokespersons.

The fourth grade text in question, "Our Virginia: Past and Present" published by Five Ponds Press, was found to have factual errors as well as grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes, according to a panel that reviewed the book at the request of the Virginia Department of Education. Another text from the same publisher, "Our America to 1865," was similarly criticized.

Gloucester Public Schools is not using any textbooks published by Five Ponds, according to a school division spokesman. She said the division uses "Horizon-Virginia" as its fourth grade Virginia history text. The textbook was published in 2002 and adopted by the division in 2003.

In Mathews, "The Virginia Adventure" published by Gibbs Smith is the history text for fourth graders at Lee-Jackson Elementary School, according to a spokesman.
