Registration is open for a student spelling bee to be held at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, in the historic courthouse, Mathews, as part of Mathews Market Days.

The first-time student bee is sponsored by Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc., and will be joined that afternoon by the traditional Corporate Spelling Bee for adults. Both are fundraisers for ALMP.

Rhoda-Jo Stress, manager of the group, said any public, private or home-school middle school student may register to participate. The registration cost for the student event is $15 per student; two or more students from the same family will be charged $25. The registration fee includes a Spelling Bee T-shirt.

Both the student and adult competitors groups will study the same spelling list, Stress said. The Student Spelling Bee Champion will have the option of challenging one member of the Corporate Spelling Bee Team Champion to perhaps become the Grand Spelling Bee Champion, Stress said. The word list will be available upon receipt of the registration form and fee.

Registration forms are available at the local libraries and at www.almpva.org.  For more information, call Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula at 804-210-9169.
