The Mathews FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1137, also known as Rocket Sauce, celebrated a successful season with its well-designed robot at last weekend’s Virginia Regional Competition, held at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond.
With five wins under its belt during the two-day match, the Mathews team’s robot placed 20th out of 64 competitors, making Rocket Sauce eligible for participation in the quarterfinals.
FCE Team 1719 from Brooklandville, Md. selected Mathews to join them in the eighth-seeded alliance, along with FCR Team 1629 from McHenry, Md., but the alliance did not advance to the finals.
Three Mathews County school officials—superintendent Dr. David Holleran, assistant superintendent Nancy Welch, and Mathews High School principal Albert Green—accepted the team’s invitation to attend the event Friday to support and cheer on the team.
Rocket Sauce team captain Becky Thompson, won top honors with the Dean’s List Finalist Award in the closing awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. She was one of two students selected for this award and will be reviewed for a higher level Dean’s List award at FRC World Championships on April 23-26 in St. Louis, Mo.
