Kristy Marie Burak graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in health, fitness and recreational resources from George Mason University during commencement ceremonies May 18. Burak had concentrated studies in therapeutic recreation and minor studies in psychology. She was also named to the spring semester dean’s list, a recognition that requires a 3.5 or higher grade point average. Burak is currently serving an internship as a recreational therapist with Riverside Health System. A 2009 graduate of Gloucester High School, she is the daughter of Randy and Sue Burak of Gloucester.

Joel Davis of Mobjack, graduated cum laude and received a degree in Christian ministries from Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., during commencement ceremonies May 18.

Samantha Good of Gloucester received a bachelor of science degree in history pre-law from Chowan University during commencement ceremonies May 11.

Elizabeth A. Luther was the 2013 recipient of a $4,000 scholarship from the Claude V. Simmons Scholarship Program, which is awarded by Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, Mathews. The daughter of Brenda and Michael Luther graduated from Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach and plans to attend Old Dominion University in the fall to study nursing. The family attends services at the Mathews church. Students may apply to the program if they are active members of the Church of Francis de Sales. Recipients are selected competitively on the basis of their academic records and personal achievements, with primary consideration given to those who demonstrate the greatest need, a release stated.

Matthew Brian Mahoney graduated with distinction and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia during commencement ceremonies May 19. Mahoney will attend Columbia University Law School in New York in the fall. A 2009 graduate of Gloucester High School, he is the son of Allison and Sherry Banks of Hayes.

Michael Pierce of Gloucester graduated cum laude and received a bachelor of science degree in history from Drury University in Springfield, Mo. during commencement ceremonies May 18. Pierce was also named to the spring semester dean’s list at Drury, a recognition that requires a 3.6 or higher grade point average.

Kevin E. Speray of Gloucester was named to the spring semester dean’s list at the University of Mary Washington where he is a senior. The recognition requires a 3.5 or higher grade point average.

Ryan Speray was one of three recipients of the Daniel W. Bly-Lamar B. Neal History and Political Science Award during the annual Awards Convocation May 7 at Bridgewater College. Each award winner received a book. Speray received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Bridgewater during commencement ceremonies May 18. He also completed minor studies in crime and justice. The son of Melissa and Alan Harris of Gloucester, Speray will pursue a juris doctor degree focusing on criminal law at West Virginia University School of Law.

Krista Sweet participated in the 87th annual commencement at Christopher Newport University on May 11. Sweet graduated with honors and received a master of science degree in environmental science from CNU in December 2012. The title of her master’s thesis was "Testing Larval Settlement Preference of the Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea virginica: Implications for Use of Triploid Oyster Shells in Restoration." Sweet is the daughter of Bob and Charlene Sweet of North.

Justin Chase Taylor received a bachelor of science degree in business marketing from Liberty University during commencement ceremonies May 11. Taylor is employed by RockTenn. He is the son of Teresa Davis of Port Haywood and Donnie Taylor of Newport News.

Alexis Ware graduated with honors from A. Crawford Mosley High School in Panama City, Fla., during commencement ceremonies June 3. Ware received a four-year basketball scholarship from University of South Carolina-Aiken where she will study biology/pre-medicine. She is the daughter of Pierre and Sheila Ware of Panama City and the granddaughter of Fanny Ware and Alandus Ware of Mathews and Agnes Spencer of Gloucester.
