The Mathews jayvee girls’ basketball team continued its winning ways, picking up two victories this past week and pushing their overall record to 14-0.

On Saturday, the Lady Devils played their toughest contest yet this season against AA Tabb High School. Mathews won the contest in a nail-biter, 21-20.

The Lady Blue Devils had been battling sickness and were down three players in the game. In a defensive-based contest, neither team scored in the first quarter as Mathews trailed, 6-5, at the half thanks to a defensive breakdown, allowing Tabb to score a three-pointer at the buzzer. Mathews once again came out flat in the third quarter and found themselves down, 14-10, after three periods.

In the final period, the Lady Blue Devils turned their defensive pressure up another notch to force numerous turnovers. On the offensive end, Mathews started to attack the basket more against their larger opponents. With 10 seconds remaining, Hunter Thomas drove the lane and scored the winning layup.

Madison Owens and Thomas led Mathews with seven points each while Maria Spadaccini added four points. Madison South scored two points and Casey Kelly rounded out the scoring with one point.
