MHS Academic Challenge team wins district championship
Following a 7-1 regular season in which the team won the Tidewater District championship, the Mathews High School Scholastic Bowl team coasted to the Tidewater District Tournament Championship in front of a home audience on Saturday.
The Scholastic Bowl team competes against district opponents, earning 10 points for correct answers to trivia questions while risking a potential five-point penalty for answering an interrupted question incorrectly.
Matches consist of two toss-up rounds and a team round in which the team discusses the answer the captain will give to the judge. The top-seeded Devils opened the tournament against fourth-seeded Middlesex, a squad that played Mathews tough in two Devil victories this season. The tournament opener appeared to be yet another classic after the first round, but a solid team round and a lopsided final toss-up round resulted in a 235-130 rout.
The Devils faced West Point in their second match of the day, playing for a berth in the tournament final. The Pointers jumped out to an early lead, but career performances by Conor Corrigan and Allison Scribe gave the Devils momentum they rode all the way to a 210-150 victory.
