Mathews School Endowment Fund awards first grant
The Mathews Community Foundation (MCF) recently awarded its first grant from the newly-founded Mathews Public School Endowment Fund. MCF spokesperson Joan Keith said the grant was made to support math literacy, and will be used primarily to purchase books on the subject.
"Math literacy is critically important for our students to survive in the world now," said Nancy Welch, assistant superintendent for Mathews County Public Schools. "They need to have a solid foundation in mathematics to do well in the job market and in everyday life."
The Mathews Public School Endowment Fund was established in 2010 by several Mathews High School alumni, Keith said. The purposes of the fund are to help the school acquire instructional materials, to increase technology capabilities, to provide learning experiences and to promote student well being.
