Local school budget situation uncertain, at present
With the 2010-2011 budget season right around the corner, Mathews County’s Superintendent of Schools David J. Holleran has gotten few clues yet about what the state’s contribution may be.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s school board meeting at Mathews High School, Holleran said that other than an indication that Gov. Bob McDonnell does not plan, at this point, to recommend supplanting money from the federal education jobs bill for use as part of this year’s general K-12 allocation, he has heard little of what else might be coming from Richmond.
"It’s been eerily quiet," Holleran said. Usually, he said, some word leaks out before the governor makes his formal announcement, but so far the McDonnell administration has been tight lipped. "Maybe no news is good news," he said, somewhat optimistically.
All that is expected to change on Friday when McDonnell releases his first budget as governor.
