Lagging enrollment in Mathews schools impacts budget

A lower-than-projected enrollment—along with the accompanying dip that could mean in state funding—has the Mathews County School Board looking to other financial sources to shore up its current budget.

During Tuesday night’s meeting at Mathews High School, Superintendent of Schools David Holleran said that the division’s enrollment currently stands at 1,212 students. The 2010-2011 budget was based on an Average Daily Membership of 1,240 students.

The school division receives state funding based upon its ADM. Holleran said that the loss in revenue in basic state aid can be offset this year through $140,988.66 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds that were unspent last year. The board, at its September meeting, accepted these funds into the 2010-2011 instruction budget line for salaries.

"That’s going to see us through this year," Holleran said after Tuesday’s meeting. "We’re going to be O.K."
