The Virginia School Boards Association has released its 17th annual VSBA Showcases for Success directory, highlighting successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools, and those from the Gloucester and Mathews school divisions are featured in it.

The Gloucester program included in the Showcases for Success is Virginia Chat. Virginia Chat (#VAchat) is a regional real-time Professional Learning Network experience hosted on a weekly basis by Virginia school administrators via the social medium Twitter. Virginia Chat was founded by Travis Burns, principal of Page Middle School, and Phil Griffin, assistant principal of Norge Elementary School in Williamsburg.

Mathews, meanwhile, has two programs making the Showcases for Success. The first is Making Math Fun! This program at Thomas Hunter Middle School has students taking control of their own learning with the support of the IXL math program. Teachers have registered each student in the school in IXL. Students are grouped by class and by the SOL level they are studying. The program is an online, interactive math program that allows students unlimited practice to math skills.
