Thomas Hunter Middle School staff and students will be hosting a fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday to benefit the school’s nature trail.

This event will include a yard sale, bake sale, 50/50 raffle and metal salvage collection. There will be trailers available to collect donations of scrap metal, aluminum cans, etc. The event will be held in the parking lot of THMS. All proceeds will benefit the new Outside Inside Out project.

Outside Inside Out is designed to get the students, staff and community of Mathews outside to enjoy nature and all it has to offer. The approximately 1.25-mile nature walk will be available to the teachers and students of Lee-Jackson Elementary and Thomas Hunter Middle schools during and after school.

This project includes outdoor classrooms and a nature walk that will give students the opportunity to enjoy the natural environment firsthand, with hands-on experience to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom, in books and on the internet. This nature trail will adjoin a saltwater marsh, a mature arboretum, a freshwater wetlands and open fields, thus affording opportunities for learning that other schools would have to go on field trips to experience.
