A group of Mathews County residents is banding together to provide tutoring and homework help for the school division’s students.

Retired Mathews teacher Judy Rowe spoke about the group during Tuesday night’s school board meeting, which was held in the Mathews High School media center. The group, which has had several meetings so far, includes representatives from the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Mathews Memorial Library and a number of area churches.

Rowe said the group is also concerned with providing nutrition to the students, with the churches taking part in the popular Snack Pack program that provides students receiving free or reduced-price lunches with snacks for the weekend. Since the group is interested in feeding both mind and body, they have talked about calling themselves "Operation Brainfeed," Rowe said.
