Chesapeake Bank signs on as spelling bee sponsor
Chesapeake Bank’s Gloucester branches have joined the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal as sponsors for Spelling for Literacy, the fundraising event being held by Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc., at Mathews Market Days on Saturday, Sept. 10.
In addition, Chesapeake’s Mathews branch is supporting the student spelling bee. The National Spelling Bee is a scholarship program and Adult Literacy has sought support from local financial institutions for assistance in making their student bee a scholarship program, as well.
In addition to the incentive offered by Chesapeake Bank for the student winner, Colonial Virginia Bank has agreed to open a $50 dollar savings account for the student winner, said Rhoda-Jo Stress, director of Adult Literacy.
Emphasis on the student participation continues this week as the one-day "spelling camps" will be held today in Mathews at the Boys and Girls Club and on Friday at Gloucester Library. The camps will focus on presentation skills, techniques to assist the spellers in becoming better spellers with each camp ending with the showing of the film, "Akeelah and the Bee." Parents are encouraged to attend the film, Stress said.
