Gloucester High School principal Layton H. "Tony" Beverage has been selected to receive the 2010 Outstanding Principal Award from the Curry School of Education Foundation. The award is presented annually to a graduate of the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education.

Beverage has been the GHS principal since 2005. The school has met requirements for full state accreditation each year of his tenure and has met adequate yearly progress goals under the No Child Left Behind Act.

"In just a few years, he has been instrumental in establishing a positive learning environment and dedicated focus on students at Gloucester High School," said Gloucester Public Schools superintendent Ben Kiser, in nominating Beverage for the award. "I see daily his professionalism, enthusiasm and diligence in working with other professionals to help students succeed. He is a consummate teacher and learner." Both men hold doctorates in administration and supervision from the Curry School.

Beverage also holds a bachelor of arts degree from Fairmont State College and a master’s degree in educational administration from the College of William and Mary. An educator since 1984, he was named a 2009 Outstanding Youth Advocate by the Gloucester County Youth Commission and received the 2009 Competence to Excellence Award from the Virginia Board of Education. He is also past president of the Gloucester Point Rotary Club.

The Curry School of Education will honor its Outstanding Alumni Award recipients during a banquet in September.
