Gerald and Amenta Buckner of Midlothian, fifth and sixth from left, recently donated $10,000 to Mathews High School toward the purchase of a new scoreboard for the school’s athletic field. Gerald Buckner, a 1954 Mathews High School graduate and a player on the school’s winning football team, has challenged other alumni to come forward with donations for the remaining $5,000 it will cost to purchase and install the scoreboard. Todd Welch, the husband of Buckner’s daughter, Mathews County Public Schools assistant superintendant Nancy Welch, has donated $3,000. Shown with the Buckners are, from left, Mathews High School athletic director Paul White, JV football player Joey Scales, MHS coach Tom Dutton, varsity football player James Pavik, and Mathews High School principal Albert Green.
