Open houses begin Aug. 31 at Gloucester schools

Gloucester County Public Schools has announced its Open House schedule in preparation for the 2010-11 school year.

Local agencies help 30 Mathews children get ready for school year

Hands Across Mathews and Mathews County Social Services helped 30 needy Mathews children prepare for the upcoming school year on Aug. 10 with their annual Fresh Start Back to School shopping trip to Walmart.

School personnel are appointed

The Gloucester County School Board made several personnel appointments during its Aug. 10 meeting.

Mathews school convocation to be held Aug. 25

Mathews County Public Schools’ opening day convocation will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, in the Mathews High School auditorium.

Gloucester cadets take part in training at Milford Haven

The Gloucester High School NJROTC unit staff for the upcoming school year participated in training July 20-23 at Milford Haven Coast Guard Station in Mathews.

Pack the bus

Photo: EVB Bank and the Salvation Army joined forces at the Gloucester Walmart on Saturday to fill the back of two SUVs with school supplies for local needy school children. Local individuals and churches purchased supplies in Walmart, then donated them as they exited. The effort will help over 60 Gloucester families send their children off to the first day of school with backpacks full of supplies. In addition, the children will receive clothing furnished by Ware Episcopal Church. Matheson named to scholarship board

John Matheson of Gloucester, has been named to the board of trustees of the Friends of Cliff Asbury Ltd.

VIMS professor contributes data to NASA mapping project

Data from Bob Diaz, a professor at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, are being used on a new global map created by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to highlight the connection between human population density, nutrient pollution, and low-oxygen marine dead zones.

VIMS summer youth camps paid for by anonymous donor

Thanks to an unnamed donor, more than 100 children attended camps at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science this summer free of charge.
