Letter: Y is much more than a place for exercise
Most everyone knows the Y as a great provider of programs and services. Here in Mathews for example, we offer group exercise classes, like Zumba, Pilates, and yoga; we have a great year-round youth soccer program; we even offer swimming and water exercise in the summer. From sailing to volleyball to cardio and strength training equipment to fit most people’s needs, the Y offers something for everyone.
The Y is about much more than programs and services, however. Through the Y, youth are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Through the Y, youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance, and resources to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body. And, through the Y, volunteers are combining efforts to build a stronger, more inclusive community and promote positive change for all.
Every day, we work side by side with neighbors in our community to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. While the Y is a well-established and well-known organization, it is not widely known that the Y is a charitable organization and is listed as one of the top charities in the nation. We appreciate the individuals and businesses that choose to make the Mathews Family YMCA their charity of choice. And, thanks to your generous support, we provided over $38,000 in financial assistance to local youth, adults and families in 2010. Also, thank you for entrusting us with the opportunity to prove we are good stewards of our resources by reaching out to more and more residents in Mathews each year.
The Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical needs for 160 years. Strengthening community is our cause. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
