Letter: Volunteers show spirit of Mathews to visitors
On behalf of the Bikes, Bands and the Bay Festival (Tour de Chesapeake), I would like to thank the many volunteers who took part in this 13th annual event.
The Gwynn’s Island Civic League, Mathews Rotary Club, Mathews Maritime Foundation, Greg and Lori Dusenberry, Wade Brooks, the Chamber of Commerce and Boy Scout Troop 124 put together fabulous rest stops for the cyclists! Nelda Gibbs, Diane Bing and the ladies from Lee-Jackson cafeteria, James Michael and Casey Shaw, the MHS Beta Club, Locust Grove UM Church and Westville Christian Church made sure the participants and volunteers were well fed all weekend.
Carolyn August, Johnny St. Clair, Jimmy Jones, Mercy Creek and Matthew Crim entertained them; Kat Sharp massaged them; Captain Sid Foster, our local Sheriff’s auxiliary, our rescue squad, and members of the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club kept them safe and cycling smoothly; the Mathews Film Society, Mobjack Kayaking, Chesapeake Board Sports, the Poddery, Mobjack Sailing, Mathews Art Gallery, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, White Dog Inn wine tasting and the Mathews Rotary Club Sausage and Beer Fest gave them plenty of activities to do and enjoy; and Cleo Hayes, Lee Daniels, Boo Keels, our great Mathews County School System and the numerous home hosts made their stay in Mathews very pleasant and easy.
I also need to thank the Boys and Girls Club, the Mathews YMCA and the Mathews Sheriff’s Office for a great Bike Rodeo for the kids on Friday, Trudy Flippin for the very necessary potties, Alfred Harris of VDOT for the signs and road management, David and Pamela Muffelman for the historic displays and "talks" about Mathews and Mobjack, Bob Wohlfort, Joyce McKelvey, Bev Holmberg and Graham Hood for the wonderful and informative "green" exhibits, the Lions Club for the tents, tables and chairs and the wonderful road monitors who helped folks along the route: Keith Lowe, Rebecca Grow, Andy Diggs, Ursula Lemanski and Garland Likens.
A special thank you goes out to Amanda Taylor, Ann Miller and the Mathews Visitor and Information Center volunteers for answering any and all questions, pointing folks in the right direction, and generally making folks feel welcome.
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the residents of Mathews. I appreciate your patience and kindness to those visitors who just want to enjoy our lovely county for the day. I am proud to call Mathews my home and you all my neighbors.
