Letter: SWAT needs to revamp its procedures
A home invasion is just that, a home invasion. It doesn’t matter if it is a thug or a paramilitary team of cops playing soldier. SWAT was intended to be the extreme answer to the extreme situation in protecting the people from violence. Most of the time that is where it is utilized; however, this home-invasion thing where armored personnel carriers and a platoon of men playing soldier invade a pot grower’s home is not protecting the people.
This defeats the purpose of why SWAT was created in the first place. Maybe it is time we create a law that eliminates this paramilitary home-invading nonsense. This is life, this is America and these are American people at home. Protect them, SWAT, and stop scaring the hell out of children and killing innocent people. In the least we need to revamp completely what SWAT is and what it is there to protect.
I know many police officers and many retired police officers and they will agree with me on most points. How does a full-force military-style home-storming from room to room, damaging the house and the children’s lives who may be there, not to mention the innocent animals, protect the people? Can someone tell me that? How does this protect us?
Maybe we need protection from these over-zealous self-imposed combat units that do not have a war to fight. The people are not the "bad guy" or the "perps." The people are all innocent until proven guilty and there is nowhere in the constitution of this great nation does it say that this type of police brutality is necessary.
We need to revamp in the least. At the worst we may need to rid ourselves of SWAT altogether since there is no war other than the one they seem to want to fight here at home against us. This is not what SWAT is supposed to be.
