Letter: Spreading the word of freedom … online
Looks like someone needs to update "the pen is mightier than the sword" to something like "accessibility is freedom" or "life, liberty and accessibility," given current world events. A sea change is happening in the Middle East, enabled by cell phone and internet access.
A decade ago, dictators, radical clerics and royals could control the poor and uneducated populations by controlling radio and television, keeping the masses unable to communicate by shutting down telephone lines, leaving fliers or word of mouth as their main method to rally. Now through cell phone applications, communications are instant and the world sees quickly how all parties behave.
No one knows how the Middle East will look 10 years from now, but I believe if you show the people how free people of the world live, and what is possible, then things will change. None of this would be possible without the instant access to information that is sweeping the planet.
We here in Gloucester can learn from this. Internet service that is accessible (think affordable) to all citizens can be an important tool. Don’t be surprised if the kid that started Facebook gets at least a Nobel mention.
