Letter: Showcasing Mathews County’s rich history
The Mathews County Historical Society, established in 1964, recently announced its sponsorship of a Mathews County Historical Museum which will occupy space above the Mathews Visitors Center.
Plans for developing the space are underway, with special committees formed to perform special tasks, such as design, development, acquisition policy, governance, research and scope of the collection.
One of the committees hard at work is the acquisitions committee. The committee is comprised of Mathews County residents who are volunteering their services to meet with officials from other neighboring museums to learn firsthand some of the scope involved in designing the basic collection. This group—which includes Sandy Warhol, chair; Forrest Morgan, Dee Bane, Reed Lawson and Frank Lansinger—will help define the collections/acquisitions policy for the museum collections, as well as how the museum will make its collections available to the public.
The Mathews County Historical Society is reaching out to our community to seek local talent with expertise in any one of the areas mentioned to help create and operate our local museum. Persons interested in helping this exciting venture, please contact me at 804-725-3862 or Sandy Warhol, chair of the acquisitions committee, at 804-725-3983.
Monetary contributions toward this special Mathews County Museum may be sent to MCHS, P.O. Box 855, Mathews, Va. 23109, earmarked “Museum.”
On behalf of the Historical Society, we thank the community for its support.
