Letter: Rilee is clear choice for Gloucester Sheriff
The citizens of Gloucester have but one clear choice for sheriff this Nov. 8 and that choice is Larry Rilee. Larry has the years of law-enforcement experience needed to lead the department in these difficult times. He has received numerous awards for his work as a homicide detective with the City of Newport News. He was born and raised in Gloucester and has chosen to raise his family here. He knows the goodness of the people of this county and what they are capable of.
Meanwhile, you have two other candidates pointing their fingers at each other, blaming the other for the department losing its accreditation. Under Sheriff Gentry, burglaries have increased and drug arrests have decreased. Recently, there was a large drug bust where the sheriff says, "See what I’m doing." Why does he wait for an election year to do something?
The other finger-pointer can’t keep his word for 24 hours. He ran for "his" party’s nomination and lost. All those who attended the mass meeting pledged to support the nominee. Well, Ted Koehl lost his bid, but still continues to run as an independent. How can we expect someone to keep a campaign promise after breaking his pledge in less than 24 hours? I spoke with the chairman of the Gloucester Republican Committee and was informed that Ted was asked to resign from the committee since he decided to run against his party’s nominee. We have a fourth candidate who has had several confrontations with the law and has been charged and convicted of brandishing a firearm against a deputy.
So clearly, we the citizens have a clear choice for sheriff. I’m asking my fellow voters in Gloucester to go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and cast their vote for Larry Rilee—for honesty, integrity, professionalism and accountability.
