Letter: Pet Castle run raised $3,600
As coordinators of the third annual Pet Castle Distance Run and Pet Walk at Williams Wharf Landing on April 9, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make this event a great success.
Congratulations to all the runners and pet walkers. Volunteers, this event could not have happened without your help and support. To the dozens of people who raised funds and who contributed funds to sponsor pets and shelter animals, a sincere thank you. Also, many thanks to The Pet Castle and to State Farm agent Josh Junker for their sponsorship of this event. The support services provided by the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Mathews County Schools contributed greatly to the safety of the participants. The media promotion and coverage provided by WXGM Radio, Humane Society staff, and this newspaper was essential to the success of this event.
All of the net proceeds will go to the Mathews Land Conservancy and the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society. This is the only Mathews County event which raises funds for the shelter animals, and we are very pleased to announce that this year’s net proceeds will exceed $3,600.
We are also very appreciative of the generous support from numerous Gloucester and Mathews merchants that contributed free prizes for event participants. The Top Business Award winner which raised the most funds to sponsor a shelter animal was Waste Management Middle Peninsula Landfill. The Top "My Pet" Award winner for the second consecutive year was Viper, a beautiful red Doberman owned by V. Ramsay. Special thanks to Mathews Sentara Physical Therapy (Jimmy’s PT Pit Crew) which raised significant funds for Jimmy and other special-needs shelter animals.
Thanks for all the hard work of all the animal sponsors. And, heartfelt thanks to all our wonderful GMHS dogs and cats that attended this event and helped to promote homeless animal adoptions. A big thank you to all the other animals that participated, creating a petting zoo-like environment: Relay the donkey, a horse, two goats, a turkey, a rabbit and even a pet rat.
We are looking forward to a bigger and better fourth annual Distance Run and Pet Walk next April. Please plan to join us for the fun.
