Letter: Mother pleads for help
My son has been missing since Jan. 21. If this was your child and he was missing for over five months, what would you do? I’ve been trying to find my son since that cold day he was seen walking down Low Ground Road in Gloucester with only the clothes on his back, no wallet, no credit cards, no cell phone and only a small amount of money. He’s 26 years old, he’s made many mistakes but he was trying to get his life in order.
He has a good heart; he is still my only child and I love him dearly regardless of his problems. I contacted every person he might have called s and not one person has heard from him. I contacted Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, State Police and FBI. Gloucester said they couldn’t do anything because he was an adult and State Police and the FBI said they wouldn’t help unless requested by Gloucester Sheriff’s Office.
My family and I have gone door to door and put out over 100 missing person flyers throughout Gloucester and Newport News, and paid to have had his picture and missing person information printed in two newspapers. I called all the numbers he had called before he went missing. I put the information on the CNN Nancy Grace Missing Person i-report webpage, several Facebook sites where it was re-posted to other sites and states. No one has heard from my son. I hired a psychic detective—Noreen Ranier—who has worked with law enforcement for years on over 600 cases.
After two months of begging, calls from another county sheriff and Commonwealth’s Attorney, Gloucester County Sheriff Gentry assigned investigators and did a missing person report. The investigators traced down where he was and who he talked with up to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. There has been no trace of him since that afternoon. Newport News Canine Unit brought a bloodhound to the area which did not pick up a scent. requested a cadaver dog the next week which went to the same area but the dog did not pick up a scent. This area is surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods which would require searching on foot and with dogs. My family and friends organized a search of over 50 people and did a search of the wooded area with no results. Due to the thickness of the woods and the wet marshy areas I believed search dogs were required.
Law enforcement can make a request to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) who will put out a call to Search and Rescue (SAR) Teams. The SAR teams are volunteers so there is no cost to the county. I have been requesting Sheriff Gentry make the call to VDEM and request cadaver dogs which he has finally done.
I believe in my heart my son went into the woods off Low Ground Road or near there and I will never hear his voice telling me that he loves me or feel his arms around me giving me a hug.
Why isn’t my son, who I believe is lying in the woods somewhere wasting away, more of a priority? He’s a human being, a son, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, a boyfriend. It’s not only me who mourns and suffers each passing day that we don’t find him.
I am begging now—someone please help me. I have to find my son regardless of his condition. I will not stop looking for him until I’ve taken my last breath and then my family will continue the search.
