Letter: Mathews wrestling match a well-run event
Mathews may be a single A division school, but it is AAA when it comes to pulling off well-executed events. On Friday and Saturday, Mathews hosted the Region A wrestling meet, which included 13 schools from the Eastern Shore, Northern Neck, Tidewater and Tri-Rivers districts of Virginia.
The meet was extremely well organized. All events began exactly on time. There were no delays between matches. The scorers and timers were knowledgeable individuals. The announcer was excellent and made sure all wrestlers were at their designated bouts on time.
The fans were gracious regardless of the outcome of the match. Team scores were announced at regular intervals and bracket sheets were kept up to date. Two referees per match assured an accurate result and ultimate safety for each wrestler. The concession stand was well manned and excellent food was enjoyed by many.
During this wrestling season, we have attended meets at several other schools—some large and some small. None of them could hold a candle to the event at Mathews. Coach Tom Holaday has every right to be proud of his wrestlers, his assistant coaches, and all the volunteers that made this happen.
Mathews will take seven young men to Salem Thursday to wrestle for their place in the state record books on Friday and Saturday. Although it will be a very special event, it can’t be any better than what we were so fortunate to experience last weekend.
