Letter: Making Saturdays special
Pat and I have lived in Mathews for about 13 years. We have made many friends and have really enjoyed our life here. I love to go downtown, on Saturday morning during the warmer months. We go to the farmers’ market and just generally walk around poking our noses into the various establishments. What I enjoy most is talking to all of the friends and neighbors that we meet on the streets. It is really pleasant living in a small but vibrant town like our Mathews. I tried to write a poem about how I feel.
To Mathews on Saturday Morning
To Mathews on a Saturday morning
to see what there is for sale.
We go to the farmers’ market
at the old courthouse in front of the jail
We find the new bakery open
and check out the fresh bread and sweets.
We know they are all delicious
as are all the rest of their treats
Next we enter the Bay School
and check out the wonderful art.
What a blessing it is to Mathews
for giving new talent a start
We meet old friends and neighbors
as we walk up and down each street.
We stop and discuss the local news.
This makes our morning complete
Is it time to plant the tomatoes?
Is the asparagus seller in town?
Fresh seafood is sold on the corner
from the truck that’s spotted and brown
I am glad that I live in Mathews.
I am glad for the friends that I meet
on Saturday morning in sunshine
as we walk up and down each street
