Letter: Let school board do its job
Editor, Gazette-Journal:
It is disturbing to read that our board of supervisors is considering to change the county funding from lump sum to categorical funding for our schools.
The school board, like the board of supervisors, is elected by the people. Every effective leader knows that the power of success comes from delegating tasks to people who are more informed and entrenched than they. So let the school board do its job. The members have proven to be good stewards of the county’s money by coming in under budget on certain categories.
Most people don’t realize as the teachers’ contract days shorten due to lack of funding, so does their pay. They are forced to do much more even though they are being given much less.
Part of good leadership is letting go and letting others lead. So please, be a good example of this. The board of supervisors has entirely too much to do already without micromanaging our school board.

Editor’s note: While contracts for some school employees were shortened, with a corresponding cut in pay, contracts for full-time certified teachers were not.
