Letter: Isn’t Obamacare supposed to cover this?

Posted on Nov 28, 2012 - 12:48 PM Printer Friendly View

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I recently read that the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic is launching a $2.5 million capital campaign to buy and set up a new facility. Here I must admit some confusion.

Three years ago, a Democrat-controlled House, Senate and Presidency passed the most comprehensive, universal and (most importantly) affordable health care system known to man. And the Supreme Court, led by liberal Chief Justice John Roberts, ruled the entire system, including fines … oops, scratch that … taxes, is Constitutional.

The recent reelection of Obama indicates that at least half the population of this country is in favor of this new, improved government-run health care system that covers everybody and is euphemistically known as Obamacare. The bill establishing this system is over 2,000 pages long. Here I must admit that like many, including some in Congress, I have not read the bill; but have heard and read plenty about it since it was proposed and passed. It covers everybody in the United States with some form of health care coverage, even illegal immigrants.

I could go on for pages with some of the details about it. But certainly everyone knows that you can’t be denied insurance coverage because of preexisting conditions, that if you don’t work, you get some sort of free coverage, and if you don’t make much money, you will get coverage at a reduced rate. Any expenses not covered by premiums are paid for by people who pay income and other taxes. Coverage is provided by a combination of employers, insurance companies, state- and federal-run insurance pools, health care exchanges, Medicare, Medicaid and probably some stuff I’ve forgotten or has yet to be discovered buried deep in the bill.

This program even limits the profits of insurance companies and mandates that no more than 20 percent of insurance premiums go to administrative costs. Everybody gets enrolled in some sort of coverage starting in October 2013 and in January 2014 everybody will have some sort of health insurance coverage that will cover all of their medical needs.

Since everyone will have coverage and there will no longer be people in this country needing free health care, why isn’t the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic winding down its operations and going out of business? Like many, I applaud the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic for its efforts over the years, but certainly they realize that the Most Magnanimous Uncle $ugar has now blessed us with Universal Health Care and their charitable mission is no longer needed or required.

Beam Me Up, Dear Leader, as left-wing, socialist, liberal Democrats work to create their idea of a perfect society—a utopia, where charity by individuals, organizations and churches is no longer needed or desired and where what we used to give to charity is taken from us by Uncle $ugar to create his idea of the perfect world.
