Letter: Gloucester schools are among the best anywhere

Posted on Jun 08, 2011 - 04:32 PM Printer Friendly View

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I retired as a full-time teacher and coach last June after 41 years (29 years in Petersburg, 11 in Chesterfield County and one in Richmond). I taught math/science on the secondary level with my last three years at James River High School, a nationally recognized school of excellence.

This semester, I’ve been substitute teaching in the Gloucester County Public Schools at all levels. I have found the students to be cooperative, polite and disciplined. The classroom teachers left detailed lesson plans, and those teachers in the vicinity of my room were kind and helpful. Modern technology was used for instruction. GCPS are as well run as any system I’ve had the pleasure to serve.

While volunteering with the track team this spring, I’ve observed the other athletic teams being instructed and supervised effectively by their coaches. The students and athletes in Gloucester bring positive attention to themselves, their families, the GCPS, the teachers and the community.
