Letter: Gloucester citizens are being hoodwinked
Editor, Gazette-Journal:
The citizens of Gloucester County elect supervisors and school board members to represent them in the management of the county and its schools. There are some, however, once elected, apparently due to the lack of knowledge and experience, shirk their responsibilities and concede them to an employee who has taken complete control of the construction of the new school—totally ignoring the voices of the citizens.
The school superintendent, whose sole purpose appears to be self-gratification, stated the completion date for the new school has been extended to April 2015. There is method in his madness. The 2013 budget has been milked dry. He has expressed the need for more money. By extending the completion date, he will have another budget year to satisfy his palatial dreams.
We do not need a showplace with glass walls and large, open spaces. School attendance has been declining. We need to plan accordingly.
The school superintendent has already expressed his interest in plans for additional facilities on the property and the value of the Page property. Gloucester citizens are being duped. It is time our elected representatives assume their responsibilities and hire an unbiased architect to manage the construction of the necessary facilities needed for the education of our students.
Let wiser heads prevail. Gloucester citizens cannot afford the present management.
