Letter: For Jones
As someone who will be applying to college this upcoming year, there are a lot of things to consider, especially picking a school and a major that will provide me with the amplest variety and amount of job opportunities once my collegiate studies conclude in 2016. As I look down the road, there are plenty of goals I can set that are within my control; for example, obtaining a certain GPA or being involved in certain clubs.
However, there is one thing that I cannot control—the job market. As of May 2011, the unemployment rate in Virginia is 6 percent. However, in the nation as a whole, it is 9.2 percent. Almost one out of every 10 Americans is not working, which presents many problems. With a lack in jobs and a surplus in employees, young adults, just out of college, are not going to be able to find jobs easily. The more experienced adults out of the 9.2 percent of those who are unemployed are going to be competing against people like myself, people who have just graduated.
Young people with only a degree will not be able to get jobs when competing against accomplished adults with years of experience. This concerns me, because in five years I will be seeking a career when I graduate from college. However, with the right people in office, perhaps this job crisis will be on its way toward a positive solution by the time other students and I graduate.
In the Republican primary for the 98th District in the House of Delegates, there are four candidates that all promise that they will create jobs in the commonwealth, but one candidate’s plans to create more jobs is a giant leap ahead of the others, due to his immense knowledge, particularly in the business world. Catesby Jones has the business experience that is so desperately needed in the General Assembly. With his creation of Peace Frogs Inc., a business he grew out of his dorm room at UVa, he has demonstrated that he has the skills, awareness and expertise that one can only gain through owning and growing their own business.
Because of Catesby’s experience and knowledge in the business world and in creating jobs, he is my candidate of choice in this election for the Republican nomination for the 98th District of the House of Delegates, and I hope you plan to vote for him in the Aug. 23 primary.
