Letter: Extremely grateful to be alive
I have been struggling with this letter for almost two months. My thank you list is longer than Santa Claus’ naughty/nice list!
I was involved in a very bad automobile accident on June 25. I had a seizure and the truck I was driving hit several trees and caught fire. I was trapped inside. My leg was broken in several places, my skin was burning.
Several men arrived. Disregarding their own safety, they worked together to pull me out. Once they got me to safety, I heard the truck explode three times. Those men almost died saving me! Everyone was sent there that day from God at the exact moment with the tools they needed.
I wish to thank so many people: the Gloucester County and Virginia State Police departments, the EMTs, everyone at Sentara, Brittnay, Adam, Sheriff Warren, Nuttall Store, D&M Automotive, Sunrise Donuts & Sweets, Anna’s Pizza, Hair Cuttery, Ken Houtz Chevrolet-Buick, Super Cuts, Short Lane Ice Cream Co., and each and every member and employee at the Mathews Yacht Club.
I would like to give a special thank-you to my mother, Barbara Wilkinson. She called the above businesses, who gave gift certificates to my heroes. She just had spinal surgery herself, and I know it took a toll on her. Thank you to my dad, David Wilkinson, who picked them up and brought them to me. A super big thank-you to my sister, Judi Dubey. She has put her life on hold to get me where I need to be; her husband John and father-in-law Roland have been supporting her on the back end.
I need to thank Chuck and Sara Loxley. They have rearranged their home to accommodate me. They have taken care of me and made me chocolate milk every night. I can’t thank my children enough. It was their faces I saw in the fire when I sat in that truck. I could not leave them without a mother. I got out for them. Thank you, Dezy and Ireland.
Last, but certainly not least, a million lifetimes’ worth of thank-yous to Mr. Hedrick, Mr. Coleman, Mr. Harrington and Deputy Lutz for changing my children’s futures.
