Letter: Attack on Borden, James unjustified
Editor, Gazette-Journal:
I am somewhat aggravated over the letter Mr. Thompson wrote a couple weeks ago about Andy James and Carter Borden and their "micromanaging" of the school system. Andy James has served this county for 25-35 years through the fire department. He is a competent, intelligent and concerned person and, if I’m not mistaken, he overwhelmingly defeated Mrs. Thompson in the race for BOS. Carter Borden is an equally experienced person who has served the people of Gloucester County and his constituents in the York District, of which I am one.
If Mr. Thompson was further informed, he would realize that the BOS oversees the budget and is responsible to the taxpayers for the money they spend, whether it is on school, infrastructure, buildings, etc. Someone needs to pull the reins in on the school board. We have high unemployment, property foreclosures and an aging population going into retirement with less income.
It is fiscally unrealistic to spend what we cannot repay in the foreseeable future. The federal budget is being cut; the state budget is being cut. Mr. Kiser has decided to close T.C. Walker Elementary School. Perhaps we have the wrong people running the school system. You don’t spend money you don’t have. What we do now will have to be paid for by generations to come—your grandchildren and mine.
