Letter: A hedonistic, out-of-control government
If I offend the sensibilities of the readers of the Gazette-Journal, please accept my apology. It is simply the need for plain talk that prompts my reference to what might be considered the street vernacular.
It is becoming obvious that with the crafting of Obamacare and its separation of science from ethics, the government has inserted itself into one of the most contentious social issues of our time. Obamacare appears to sanction government destruction of life. It is also beginning to appear that resistance to abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage and assisted suicide places one outside of what is beginning to appear as government policy.
How did a country with such a firm foundation on liberty succumb to the current pervasive influences of the aspects of group rights? With Chief Justice John Roberts’s magical ruling making Obamacare constitutional, a clear repudiation of over 200 years of constitutionally-protected rights of the individual has been accomplished.
It is beginning to appear that Obamacare is as equally unworkable as it is financially unsustainable. Now that we have passed the bill, we are beginning to see its contents. Could it be that the government has finally achieved an act of extreme meddlesomeness? Americans are beginning to react with a disinterested, "So what?" The ever-increasing realization of the unworkable nature of Obamacare is prompting as much humor as it is indignation. The Affordable Care Act is somewhat reminiscent of an equally unworkable legal experiment known as prohibition. To that bit of foolishness, the minority of Americans typically reacted with "So what?" Obviously, prohibition was a huge failure, and while Obamacare is of a totally different nature, the unworkable aspect of it is not far removed from prohibition.
It is only a matter of time until "So what?" comes to include a modifying adjective. What that modifier will be remains to be seen. I can imagine it will include a typically American term from the street vernacular.
With Obamacare, including such onerous provisions as IRS-mandated supervision of the tax aspect, as well as the somewhat foreboding measures of the independent payment advisory boards, Obamacare is becoming a well-known facet of what life in America might become. Might "So what?" be followed with something so often used as the ubiquitous "screw you?"
Many Americans are becoming fed up with a hedonistic, out-of-control government. The current reactions to Benghazi, the IRS scandal and the Associated Press incident are the beginnings of a new wave of awareness. It is time for the government to reconsider its stance. The Patriot Act, the National Defense Authorization Act, as well as much of what this administration is advocating is totally outside the realm of constitutional governance. The "So what?" with a modifying adjective appears to be well deserved.
