Letter: Gloucester schools handled budget cuts brilliantly
Editor, Gazette-Journal:
As a parent of a Gloucester High School student, I want to applaud the innovative and courageous efforts of Dr. Kiser and all of the employees of Gloucester County Public Schools. When faced with extreme budget cuts, GCPS was able to make changes that no other schools systems in this area were bold enough to do. While there may be downsides to cutting twenty days from the schedule for some, I think it was a brilliant plan. This saves the school system much needed money and does not compromise student academics. In addition, the change to the grading scale is yet another intelligent and bold move.
As an experienced teacher in another school district, I can tell you that GCPS takes an approach that considers all stakeholders; they are not looking for instant fixes to issues. We lived in York County for three years prior to moving back to Gloucester. Hands down that I would much rather have my daughter in Gloucester County Public Schools, than any other school system in this area. The number of course offerings that my daughter has available to her far surpass what she had before attending GHS. She has been able to explore so many different career possibilities and is seriously considering dual enrollment with RCC to become a nurse. In addition, the teachers and staff at GHS are excellent! Whenever I have had a question they always call or email me within 24 hours. Miss Sarah in the front office is so helpful no matter what you need. In a society where good service seems to be rare, I appreciate how we are treated by the teachers and staff at GHS. My daughter is having a great experience at GHS.
In my opinion we are blessed to have such an awesome school system! I would like to say thanks for all you do to Dr. Kiser, Gloucester County School Board, and all of you who work for Gloucester County Public Schools!
