Editorial: Good things

Good intentions often lead to no results, but in this season they have a way of developing into good things.
We have in mind, for instance, the Made in Mathews Open Studio Tour that has endured and grown over many Thanksgiving weekends. At a time that local streets may otherwise be deserted as shoppers go for the big bargains elsewhere, Mathews Court House is swamped with visitors looking for a good meal and finds in the shops. They have been lured to the county by the pleasure, often repeated annually, of visiting artists and crafters at their home studios.
In a similar vein, efforts to increase traffic on Gloucester’s Main Street have turned into a solid weekend of activities such as the one just behind us, although no one can prevent bad weather that will dampen some enthusiasm. A parade one day, business open houses the next, and many opportunities to visit Santa Claus, translate into a good time to see the village and do some business.
Other good things abound in the season, especially the opening of generous hearts and purses to make the holidays brighter for persons in need. Angel Trees pop up at local businesses: as just one example,
Hudgins GMC has had one for many years and has supported many Christmas parties and presents for foster children in Gloucester County. Toys for Tots bins, the Mathews Christmas Blessing Fund, community Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, and other special acts, help to bring home the meaning of the season.
