A slander against the progressives
I look forward to your letters to the editor, particularly the ones from the far right. They’re amusing in the same way that an eccentric uncle is. Persons who freely interchange the terms Fascism, Socialism and Communism without any apparent knowledge of their meaning or history can’t be taken too seriously.
But a recent letter by Dawn Dale cannot go unanswered. Her remark that "the so-called progressives on the left have zero love for America and even less for our Constitution and the values that grew from it" is a vile, despicable statement. That is a slander against progressives who have proudly served our nation in its armed forces.
In fact, the vast majority of prominent progressives in the Senate and Congress have served. The vast majority of prominent conservatives have not. See http://www.libertynewstv.com/HTML%20FILES/Chickenhawks.htm.
Next Ms. Dale seeks to equate Bible precepts with the Constitution with regard to gays serving. The USA was not founded as a Christian nation. Our system of law is not based on Mosaic Law, but on English Common Law which predates Christianity, having originated in Athens and Rome. More history books and less Glenn Beck, Ms. Dale.
As for homosexuality being a "sin," that’s irrelevant to service in the armed forces, given our nation’s non-religious foundations.
Winston Churchill stated that the single greatest act in winning WWII was the breaking of German codes with the Enigma machine. That was done by Alan Turing, a gay man who was stripped of his security clearances and subjected to chemical castration when his orientation was discovered after the war. A gay man quite literally saved this nation, perhaps the world, from Nazism.
As for Ms. Dale’s Biblically-based opposition to the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell … The Israelis have allowed gays to serve openly for many years. No sane person would claim that the Israelis aren’t one of the toughest armies in the world or that they would ever seek to weaken their military for what Ms. Dale calls "political correctness." The Israelis read Leviticus and ignored its call to execute gays.
Perhaps Ms. Dale is instead following the edicts of the apostle Paul? If so, I’d suggest she also take to heart Paul’s admonition in 1 Timothy 2:12 and remain quiet.
