Shelton C. Rowe, 86, of Gwynn, Va., passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013, at his home.

He was born on May 2, 1926, and was a lifetime resident of Gwynn’s Island, Va. He attended Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church Men’s Bible Sunday School Class until health issues developed.

He was a commercial fisherman for 60 years and seafood dealer at Callis Wharf on Gwynn’s Island.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Rainier Rowe; parents, George Vernon and Addie Diggs Rowe; sisters, Christine Holloway, Emma Lee Knight, Minnie Williams, Eleanor Stevens, and Della Forrest, and brothers, Wilson, George Vernon Jr. (Buddy), and Julian Rowe.

He is survived by his daughter, Darnell R. Wells and her husband Arthur (Art) of York, Pa.; grandson, Aaron Arthur Wells and his wife Angela of Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Atkins and her husband Bill; brother, Jack Rowe; five sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends on Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, Va. A graveside service was held on Monday, March 4 at 2 p.m. in Gwynn’s Island Cemetery, Grimstead, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
