Gladys H. Hammond, 97, of Mathews, passed away on Aug. 16, 2011 at home surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Stacy Sherwood Hammond; her parents, George P. and Bertha R. Hudgins; her brothers, Karl, Linwood and George Hudgins, and her sisters, Bertha Mae Crewe and Lady Jeannette "Blue" Haufler.

Gladys is survived by her son, Stacy L. Hammond and his wife Beverly of West Point; her grandchildren, Katherine and her husband Albert Celi, and Brian S. Hammond and his wife Cindy; also by her great-grandchildren, Scott Sherwood Hammond, Louis Hammond Celi, and Grace Hammond Celi.

Gladys was most proud of her years of service to her community as the treasurer of Mathews County from 1972 until she retired at the end of the year in 1979. She was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church. Gladys was also a member of the Mathews Art Group for many years and loved participating in the Mathews Art Gallery and Mathews Market Days.

The family received friends at the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 7-8:30 p.m. Funeral services were held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, with interment in St. Paul Annex Cemetery, Susan, Va.
