Evelyn Garland Fleet of Hartfield, widow of Dr. John I. Fleet Sr., passed from this life to eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 29, 2011.
Evelyn was born June 15, 1919 in Sandy Hook (now Topping), Va.
She was predeceased in death by her brother, Edward Earl Garland, and is survived by four children, Cynthia Fleet Lewis of Hartfield, Johlyn Fleet Hock of Raleigh, N.C., John I. Fleet Jr. ("Cookie") of Hartfield, and Edward G. Fleet (Bea) of Topping; eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was a longtime member of Lower United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities, including chairperson and secretary of the Lower Church Cemetery Association. She served as postmaster of the Hartfield Post Office from 1958-1985.
Known for her humble and compassionate manner, she was a confidant to many. Her husband, her family and her neighborhood were her dedications, and she positively affected the lives of many by her Christian example.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Lower United Methodist Church, Hartfield. Interment was in church cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda.
