William Mortimer Grover Jr., age 88, of 229 Woodside Lane, Warm Springs, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at his residence.

He was born in New Jersey on Dec. 7, 1922 to the late William M. Grover Sr. and Lillian Mae Senior Grover. He graduated from Blair Academy and the College of William and Mary, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Fencing Club.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He lived for many years in Gloucester and while there, served on the board of Sanders Nursing Home and was active in the Walter Reed Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. He retired to Warm Springs, where he was the owner of W. M. Grover Galleries and Bacova Gallery, both in Bath County.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Stone Douglass Grover of Warm Springs; one daughter, June Grover Mathis of Greeneville, Tenn.; three sons, William Howe Grover of Lancaster, William Mortimer Grover III of Old Church, and Peter Dun Grover of Lexington; five grandchildren, William Howe Grover Jr., Stephen Stone Grover, Peter Dun Grover, Edward Douglass Grover, and Katheryn Gamble Grover; two great-grandchildren, Avery Jane Grover and Sawyer Caroline Grover, and his brother, Joseph Senior Grover of Newton, Pa.

In keeping with his wishes, his body was cremated. A graveside memorial service will be held in Ware Episcopal Church Cemetery in Gloucester, on Oct. 15, 2011 at 11 a.m.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Fisher House Foundation, Inc. 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, Md. 20850-5168 or the Mountain Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.          .
