THOMAS DEW GILL
Thomas Dew Gill, 78, a son of Dr. John R. Gill and Helen Dew Gill of Mathews, died suddenly at his home in Huntington, N.Y. on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Church, Kingston Parish Cemetery.
Gill was born May 9, 1934 in Richmond and grew up in Mathews County and lived there while attending Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia. At UVA he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956, his Bachelor of Law degree in 1959, and his Master of Business Administration degree in 1961. From 1961 until November 1964, he was an attorney in a law firm in New York City.
In November 1964, Gill moved to Long Island, N.Y., where he began his career with Grumman Corporation, working in the Legal Department, and the Corporate Development Department. In July 1974 he was elected Vice President and Secretary of Paumanock Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Grumman Corporation.
For 45 years, Gill was active with the Bethpage Federal Credit Union serving as Chairman of its Executive Committee, President of the Credit Union from 1970 to 1972 and Chairman of its New Building Committee, completed in August 1974.
Gill was a member of the Virginia Bar, the New York Bar, the American Bar Association and the Business Development Council of Long Island. He was active with Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club and the Corinthians in New York, having started his racing and sailing career at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.
Gill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Meriwether Smothers, formerly of Roanoke, Va.; his three children, Thomas D. Gill Jr. of Chesapeake, Va., Meriwether Winston Gill of Camden, Me., and Mary Gordon Gill Enslow of Monet, Va., and his brother, Dr. John R. Gill of Washington, D.C.
