Posted on Aug 31, 2011 - 02:26 PM Printer Friendly View

Sally Elizabeth Calder Hunley, 81, of Mathews, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011.

Sally was born June 6, 1930, and raised in Melrose, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sally Tholander Calder and Philip Raymond Calder Sr. and husband, Capt. James W. Hunley.

Survivors include her daughter Rebecca H. Love and "favorite son-in-law" Richard M. Love; son, James W. Hunley Jr. and daughter-in-law Jamie E. Hunley; grandchildren, Braden, Jordan and Blake Hunley, Casey Love Shaw and husband James Michael, and Alan Scott and wife Kittie B. Scott; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Christopher and Kevin; her "adopted son," Richard Moughon and wife Melissa E. Moughon and "grandchildren," Daniel, Sarah Grace and Emily Paige. She was also "Nana" to Kalen and Liam O’Conner, Rebecca’s dear friend Michelle Olson’s children.

Sally attended Katie Gibbs Secretarial School and traveled the world as a cruise director and travel agent, eventually landing in the passenger department at Moore McCormick Lines where she met her husband, "Will." They married on June 7, 1969 and honeymooned in Will’s hometown of Mathews where they made their home in New Point until his passing in 1984.

She always gave of her time for her family, her church and her community as she felt by her faith that she should. Countless years as a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Council and as teacher of the Friendship Sunday School Class; faithful member and unit officer of United Methodist Women; Red Cross volunteer; and all the years her children were in school and sports.

In her own words to her children, "Take time to enjoy God’s world, the people, the flowers, the birds, and appreciate them all. Life is so short even if you live to be 100."

Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, is in charge of the arrangements.
