ROBERT BROUGHTON WALKER
Robert (Bob) Broughton Walker of Mathews, passed away Sept. 18, 2011 peacefully in his sleep at home, surrounded by three generations of his loving family after an extended battle with Alzheimers.
Born Feb. 12, 1926, in Greensboro, N.C. and raised in Rockingham, N.C. he was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
Bob leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Nellie of 63 years; a son, Robert F. Walker of Huntersville, N.C.; two daughters, Linda W. Via of Gloucester, Va., Rhonda W. Majewski and husband Tim of Suffolk, Va.; five grandchildren, Suzanne W. Via of Greensboro, N.C., Stephanie M.
Majewski of Charlotte, N.C. and Brandon C. Majewski of Suffolk, Va., Zachary V. Walker and Nicolas F. Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; five nieces, and one nephew.
He was a member of the Church of Francis de Sales and past President of the Parish Council.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. During his first tour of duty, at the Submarine Base, New London, Conn., he met his wife Nellie. They were married Dec. 13, 1947. He served during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam Conflict. The majority of his military career was spent aboard two destroyers, the U.S. Putnam 722 and the U.S. Barton 757. He received many metals, awards and ribbons for World War II Victory, Korean War, Naval Occupation, United Nations, National Defense and Good Conduct. Bob loved serving his country. In 1968, with 25
years of service, he retired as Senior Chief Petty Officer Mine Warfare Technician E8. After 14 years in Civil Service, he retired as a Weapons Engineer Technician GS12.
Family members will receive friends at the Church of Francis de Sales, 176 Lovers Lane, Mathews, Va., Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 from
11a.m.-noon. Mass of the Resurrection conducted by Father Robert Cummins and Father Nash will be at 12:15 p.m. A graveside service following the Mass will be held at H.C. Smithers Cemetery, Hudgins, Va.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be sent to the Church of Francis de Sales, The Alzheimers Foundation, or Riverside Hospice.
The Walker family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the Riverside Hospice Care team for all their loving support and concern they showed our loved one during his illness.
