Norman Hayes Poland, 81, of Gloucester Point, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 20, 2011 at his home.

Norman was born on May 21, 1929 at Gloucester Point, to the late John B. and Mae Ashe Poland. Norman, with his brothers Jack and Dickie, owned and operated Poland’s Supermarket at Gloucester Point for many years.

Norman was a graduate of Achilles High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1946-48, in Korea and Japan. He attended Hampden-Sydney College with his best grades being in math and Bible. He attended Smithdeal-Massey Business School in Richmond to become a CPA until President Truman sent him back to Korea in 1951. Norman saw 14 months of combat duty before returning home as a staff sergeant with the 2nd Division, 23rd Regiment, Co. A, U.S. Infantry. Upon returning home, Norman entered the family business as a self-taught butcher, developing his craft into a renowned reputation for the area’s finest meats.

Norman loved to play golf, fish and hunt and followed many different sports. Above all, he loved his family. He faithfully provided for and supported his children.

He is survived by son, Gary N. Poland and wife Judith of Gloucester; daughter, Cherie Jean Poland of Pacifica, Cal.; grandchildren, April Poland of Richmond, Va., John Ligon of Newport News, Va., Nicholas Ligon of Key West, Fla., Heather Poland of Gloucester, Sarah Seitz of San Francisco, Cal., Amanda Seitz of Long Island, N.Y., MacKenzie J. LeRoy of Pacifica, Cal.; former wife, Connie H. Poland; brothers, Jack Poland and wife Mary of Gloucester Point, Richard "Dickie" Poland and wife Laura of Gloucester Point, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for the loving care and support given to Norman.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Arthur L. Wolz Jr. were held 2:30 p.m. Monday at Bethany United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.

In Norman’s memory, contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 527, Gloucester Point, Va. 23062.
