MAYME WINIFRED HAYWOOD

Posted on Apr 13, 2011 - 01:47 PM Printer Friendly View

Mayme Winifred Haywood of Gloucester Point, died peacefully with her children beside her, April 8, 2011 at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 27, 1927 to the late Paul and Maddie Lewis Hogge. At the age of 15 during WWII Mayme worked at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in the Ordnance Department putting detonators in bombs.

Mayme married the love of her life, Calvin Haywood, and along with the love she poured into being a loving wife, mom, and homemaker, she worked outside of the home, as well, being the bookkeeper of the family seafood business. When she wasn’t working, some of her favorite pastimes included baking pound cakes, which her friends said were the best, and working in her gardens, at her home "Woodwin" that she loved so much. She was a well-dressed and stylish lady whose wardrobe was both chic and updated. Mayme was the ultimate example of a perfect lady. She was a member of Union Baptist Church for many years. Mayme loved being a wife, mother and grandmother above all else, and she will be remembered by so many, for so many reasons, and her legacy of love is the gift she leaves behind to keep her close at heart, always.

She was preceded in death in 1999 by her beloved husband, Calvin, to whom she had been married for 57 years.

She is survived by sons, Willie Paul Haywood and wife Jeanne, Richard W. Haywood; daughter, Deborah Haywood Baker and husband Doyle; grandchildren, Garrett and Cassie Haywood, Tammy Tousignant, Mikki Baker, Jennifer Baker; sister, Elizabeth Webb; sister-in-law, Christine Emerson, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rodney Autry and the Rev. Richard Whiteheart, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Union Baptist Church. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden. The family received friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
