Posted on Apr 06, 2011 - 01:50 PM Printer Friendly View

Jean Ellis Hudgins, of Gloucester, born May 14, 1932 in Washington, D.C., died surrounded by her family March 30, 2011 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Jeanie came to Ware Neck in 1949 a young and lovely girl not knowing how to boil hot water and left to her family and friends memories of a lovely, kind and generous lady who opened her home to wonderful meals and the best of Southern hospitality. Her perfectly picked crab meat brings fond memories to those fortunate to have enjoyed it. Her family and friends were truly blessed to have been touched by her life. Jeanie’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were gifts from heaven and she cherished every moment she spent with them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Della Chaney; husband, Samuel E. Hudgins Sr.; her brothers, Frank Jr., Billy and Paul Chaney; sisters-in-law, Elva Wood and Joyce Foster, and brother-in-law, James Hudgins.

She is survived by children, Linda Grow and husband David, Jean Marie Hudgins, Samuel E. Hudgins Jr. and wife Pam; grandchildren, Niki Grow Brown and husband Timmy, Melissa Hudgins and fiancé Carl Faris, James Hudgins and fiancée Libby Griffin, Ralph Barr and wife Christy; great-grandchildren, Cody Brown, Christian Lowney, Dustian White, Haley Faris, Kelsey Barr; sister-in-law, Alice Chaney; brother-in-law, John Foster, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance conducted by the Rev. Tom Cohick and the Rev. Charles P. Anderson Jr. was held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday following the interment in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions may be sent to American Cancer Society, for Jeanie’s Relay Team, Wooden Nickels, c/o Mrs. G. Edward Mowry, 7274 Joseph Lewis Rd., Hayes, Va. 23072.

Arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester Point.
