JEAN ELIZABETH PUGH

Posted on Oct 03, 2012 - 11:24 AM Printer Friendly View

Jean Elizabeth Pugh, 84, of Hayes, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.

Jean was born in Newport News, Va., and the daughter of Leonard Eugene Pugh Jr. and Elizabeth Melton Pugh.

She attended Newport News Public Schools and furthered her education by receiving her B.S. degree from James Madison University, MS as well as her PhD degrees from the University of Virginia. She taught biology in the Newport News Public School System, Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport University where she retired as Professor Emeritus in 1988.

Jean was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Newport News and taught Sunday school to her age group and "The Diggers."

She was a member of the Gloucester Point Rotary Club and the Virginia School Board Association.

Her parents, as well as her brother, L. E. Pugh III, preceded her in death.

Survivors are Mary Burton Gleason of Williamsburg, Va.; nephew, Eugene Harvey Pugh of Norfolk, Va.; niece, Valerie Elizabeth Biletsky of Woodland Hills, Calif., and many chosen friends whom she loved as family.

Jean is also survived by all students of Gloucester County Public Schools because education was her passion. Her life’s work after retirement was serving on the Gloucester County School Board from 1988 until her death.

Her intelligence, honesty, strength and depth of character were sustaining factors in her life and she will surely be missed.

At Jean’s request, interment will be private.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to Gloucester County Public School, Administrative Office, c/o Joanne Wright, Financial Director, 6489 Main Street, Building 2, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

Arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
