GEORGE R. POCOCK SR.

George R. Pocock Sr., 78, passed away at his home in Mathews, Va., on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, surrounded by his loved ones.

George was born on Oct. 19, 1932 to Ralph and Rosa Pocock in Uhrichsville, Ohio. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1951. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and played football on behalf of the Air Force in the 1952 Poinsettia Bowl All-Star Military Bowl game.

George was preceded in death by parents, Rosa and Ralph Pocock; daughter, Lori Kay Borbas, and twin granddaughters.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Linda Carol Pocock of Mathews; his son, George R. "Chip" (Pamela) Pocock II of North Carolina; daughters, Stephanie (Ward) Trainor, Ashley (Greg) Robins and Lora Hicks, all of Virginia; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and one brother, Alfred (Carol) Pocock of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

George spent over 50 years servicing the specialized commercial insurance needs of customers. He was owner and President of Construction Insurance Agency in Manassas, Va. He was an avid community servant having been instrumental in the founding and early operation of the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department where he also served as its first President. As a result of his efforts he was named recipient of the Herbert C. Hunter Citizen Award. He served as President of the Virginia State Jaycees as well as Administrative National Director and lifetime member of the Jaycees. He served as director of the Northern Virginia Independent Insurance Agents Association.

Most recently, George held a seat on the Steel Erectors Association of America Board of Directors, and was honored in 2006 with its highest lifetime achievement, the William Davis Service Award, in recognition for his dedication and service to the construction industry.

George was an avid outdoorsman who treasured the waters of the Chesapeake Bay region and all that it has to offer.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to those who have remembered George in their thoughts and prayers during his brief illness.

Visitation will be at the Pocock home, 311 Mill Point Road, Hudgins, Va. 23076, from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011.

The funeral will also be held at the residence at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 1.

Arrangements by Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews.
