GEORGE HENRY OHLAND

George Henry Ohland, 82, of Gloucester, Va., formerly of Brick, N.J., died peacefully in his sleep to join his wife, Hermine, in Heaven on Aug. 25, 2011 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Bill Whitley.

George was born in Queens, N.Y., on Sept. 21, 1928 to Margaret L. Von Polnitz Ohland and Henry John Ohland. He was a graduate of Chaminade High School, Mineola, N.Y. George served in the U.S. Navy as a sonar man aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, earning the World War II Victory Medal. After serving his country honorably, George attended and graduated from Fordham University with a degree in accounting.

He moved to Brick, N.J., in 1956 where he was a very active volunteer in the community. He held several positions including director, treasurer and president of the Cedarcroft Club and Property Owner’s Association. He was also a past treasurer of the Brick Lions Club and St. Peters PTA. George was a communicant of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Brick and a former vice-president of its Parish Council.

George retired in 1993 from the State of New Jersey after 21 years of service. After retirement he and Hermine enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Caribbean and relaxing at Risden’s Beach in Pt. Pleasant with all their "beach bum" friends. In 2004, they moved to Gloucester to be near family, and became communicants at St. Therese Roman Catholic Church.

George is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth O. Whitley and husband William J. Whitley III of Gloucester; daughter, Nancy J. Ohland of Gloucester; son, Lt. Col. Thomas George Ohland of Scott AFB, Ill.; grandchildren, Jennifer Staupe, husband Brian and great-grandson, Mason; John D. Crosby, Thomas J. Crosby; Sarah Baires, husband Alex and great-granddaughter Alexis; and William "David" Whitley. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Frank Feger; nieces, Anne Ohland Schulman and Catherine Anne Grove, and nephews, George Ohland, Frank Feger and John Feger.

A Mass of Christian Funeral conducted by the Rev. James Cowles will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Therese Roman Catholic Church, Gloucester. Inurnment will be private. The family received friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
